Editors Note
Dear reader,
This is the hardest letter from the editors to write - because it’s the first, and therefore in some way, historic. And because introductions matter. They matter so much, and are so daunting, that we’ve seriously considered giving up entirely - not publishing, folding the whole magazine before it even starts.
Hopefully, that doesn’t mean we’re cowards. It just means we care. Because we do.
Everyone on this (small, three-person) team cares deeply about inviting you into a world that makes you feel less alone, and a little less overwhelmed. This isn’t a vanity project, though it certainly has plenty of personal passion behind it.
Thoroughbreds has a clear editorial aim: to create a new kind of profile - one that documents and dissects how we perform ourselves online and in the media, and to question the systems that reward us for it.
We do this, mostly, by not really interviewing people at all. Our approach is to just kind of leave them to it. You’re already curating a certain perception of yourself every time you post something - why not make that explicit?
Our hope is that the people we feature take themselves seriously, ask questions with curiosity, and answer with sincerity. We believe that taking a moment to check in can grant clarity in ways a typical publicity exercise can’t. In return, we offer our respect and trust that whatever they share comes from an honest place of self-awareness.
We’re not in the business of breaking news. There are plenty of platforms that do that, do it well, and deserve your attention. What we will publish are opinion pieces, interviews, and cultural critiques. They may not always be timely, but they will at least be thoughtful and sometimes clever.
Whether you’re reading this on day one or years in the future, we’re glad you’re here - and we hope you’ll stay for the ride.
All our love,
— N.C.B., F.W., & A.

Questions We Hope You Want to Ask Us
Why the horsey motif?
It's probably clear at this point that this is not a horse racing publication (horses are awesome, though). Thoroughbreds is about people, performance, and the pursuit of being deemed exceptional. Media for sustenance, not sport. All horse imagery is playful, and because, well, we do love a theme.
Do the editors change any answers?
Nope! Self-interviews are lightly copyedited, but never significantly altered. Follow-up editorial conversations are edited, as any interview would be, for brevity and clarity. We do not allow interviews to be done on behalf of other people, or words to be attributed to them that they didn't themselves say. No exceptions.
Can I submit a self-interview?
We only take interviews on pitch. Take a look at our guidelines here.
I'm a publicist/manager/agent. Can I submit my client's self-interview?
You can send us a pitch!
Is there a way to pitch an idea that isn’t about me?
Absolutely - we're mostly interested in stories with a highly personal point of view. If you're interested in writing for us, or getting involved as more than a subscriber, this is the page for you.
